Neymar Jr. is projected to start against Croatia on Friday in the quarterfinal of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar (December 9). The Selecao won decisively against South Korea in the Round of 16 by a score of 4-1 to move on to the semifinals of the competition. Neymar has had a very difficult World Cup. The Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) forward suffered an ankle injury during Brazil’s opening encounter against Serbia. Due to the injury, the forward was unable to play in the final two games of the group.

Brazil’s talismanic number 10 positioned himself as an attacking midfielder behind Richarlison during the match against South Korea. Therefore, he might also be used against Croatia in a similar capacity. While at the FIFA World Cup, Neymar has a great record against Croatia. In the World Cup group stage against Croatia, the former FC Barcelona forward scored twice. In a 2-0 victory in a 2018 international friendly against Croatia, he even scored a goal. After extra time ended with a 1-1 stalemate, Croatia defeated Japan on penalties to go to the Round of 16.

After his goal against South Korea, Neymar scored 76 goals in 123 appearances for Brazil. He trails Pele by one goal in the five-time world winners’ all-time scoring rankings. The PSG attacker, now that he is fully fit, has a chance to surpass the famous forward at the current FIFA World Cup. Brazil still has a chance to play three more World Cup games. The PSG forward might play enough games if they go to the final to surpass Pele’s record.
