Weighted Coins and Racist Abuse at Man City vs Liverpool. In the Carabao Cup match between Man City and Liverpool, one fan received a missile to the head, and another was booted off the field for allegedly using racial slurs. According to The Telegraph, a police inquiry has been opened after a 15-year-old Man City fan suffered head injuries at Etihad Stadium after being struck with a plastic cup that was “weighted with pennies” and thrown from the Liverpool area. Sources have verified that a City supporter was also removed from the stadium for allegedly using racial slurs against Liverpool fans with disabilities. The hosts won the game 3-2.

“Manchester City FC, Liverpool FC, and the Chairs from our supporter groups have worked together in over the last week to remind fans of our expectations,” read a joint statement from City and Liverpool following the game. “Both clubs would like to thank the vast majority of supporters for their behavior at last night’s Carabao Cup match at the Etihad Stadium,” it added.

It went on: “However, it is quite sad that a number of completely inappropriate incidents occurred during last night’s game. These instances will be thoroughly examined and reported to the police, and anyone found to be at fault will be subject to the club’s sanctioning procedure. Both Manchester City FC and Liverpool FC are devoted to cooperating to eliminate these problems from our games. They don’t belong in football.”

The incident involving the adolescent girl is being looked into by the Greater Manchester Police. A statement read, “A 15-year-old girl was treated for head injuries and we will be investigating.” Liverpool will play Aston Villa on Boxing Day, while Pep Guardiola’s team will play Leeds United on December 28.
