In the return leg of the Europa League semi-final, clash Arsenal held a goalless draw against Villarreal. Unai Emery’s players will play in the final in Gdansk despite not scoring a goal in the second leg, thanks to a 2:1 win in the first meeting.  For the Spaniards, it will be their first-ever final in this competition.

Samuel Chukwueze took a technical shot from the corner of the penalty area, but Bernd Leno was alert in goal and deflected the ball for a corner kick. In the 29th minute due to injury, the 22-year-old Nigerian had to leave the field of play quickly and was carried off on a stretcher as he was unable to get off his feet.

In the 26th minute, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang had the best chance and Arsenal struggled to threaten Geronimo Rulli’s goal as they did in the first leg. The Gabonese tried his luck with a situational shot, but the ball hit the post. The hosts were more focused on the second half and looking for the decisive goal as they were afraid to take their chances.

Arteta’s team was not close to scoring and they had only one shot on target in the first half against  Villarreal. The visitors faced a good opportunity a few minutes after the break. Conclusively, the team lost a counter-attack, specifically Gerard Moreno, who ended the action with a shot, but light enough for Leno to have no problems catching the ball.

Arteta introduced more attacking players as Willian and Alexandre Lacazette arrived on the pitch. Aubameyang hit the post once again before the Frenchman replaced him. In the 79th minute, a good pass from the right wing was shown off by Hector Bellerin.

In the penalty area, the Gabonese jumped highest and managed to shoot with his head, but the visitors were saved by the post for the second time this evening. In the end, not a single goal was scored and Villarreal advanced to the final on the basis of their first leg scores. Emery will play in the final of this competition for the fifth time.
