On Tuesday, Saul Niguez made his first start for Chelsea in almost a month, and he left Thomas Tuchel impressed. Chelsea head coach Thomas Tuchel is all praise for Saul’s performance against Southampton in the Carabao Cup at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea ended up in a 1-1 draw with Southampton yesterday, which wasn’t the best match result, but worthy of appreciation.
Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel, at least, praised Saul Niguez’s all-around performance in Chelsea’s EFL Cup clash against Southampton on Tuesday.
Saul has only played once since appearing against Aston Villa in the previous round. That was against Malmo in the Champions League last week.
But the Atletico Madrid loanee, whom coach Tuchel substituted at half-time in his only Premier League appearance, finished the game.
Tuchel Is All Praise for Saul’s Performance against Southampton
In the Chelsea-Southampton game last night, Saul Niguez delivered a wonderful header just six minutes into the match.
This is how Niguez came close to opening the score for the Blues, surprising Fraser Forster into a superb save.
And that’s not all – Saul made four shots in total, three of which were on goal.
Meanwhile, Saul and his midfield partner Mateo Kovacic also came together for a six tackles, the highest in the game.
Impressively, three of these tackles Saul completed, though he did commit four fouls along the way.
And his coach Tuchel was quite away with this performance.
“[He had] a good match, a huge step in the right direction for him,” Tuchel told the post-match.
“I am happy,” the Blues coach went on. “We thought maybe he would be struggling with the intensity at the 70th minute but he got better and better, had chances and shots.
“We thought let’s keep him and give him the minutes. It was a good step for him.”
