Europe’s top teams Manchester City and Real Madrid won their respective matches to secure their places in the last-16 stage of UEFA Champions League football, but Atletico Madrid are on the verge of being eliminated. Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) could not capitalize on an early lead with a goal (50th minute) from Kylian Mbappe as City gave it a 2-1 loss. Rahim Sterling (63rd minute) and Gabriel Jesus (76th) scored two goals for City. Despite this, the French team managed to make it to the Champions League last-16 stage from Group A.
Real Madrid avenged their loss to the Moldova side two months earlier by beating Sheriff 3-0 to make it to the last-16. David Alba, Toni Kroos, and Karim Benzema scored for Real. Apart from Real from Group D, Inter Milan entered the Champions League knockout stage. They defeated Shakhtar Donetsk 2-0 in another football match.
Three-time European champions Inter Milan made it to the last-16 after 10 years. Meanwhile, Sporting Lisbon beat Borussia Dortmund by a 3-1 match score with two goals from Pedro González to end a 13-year wait to reach the knockouts. Sporting lost to Ajax and Dortmund in Group C in September, but with three consecutive victories, Portugal’s champions were able to advance with one match remaining.
Ajax had already made it to the knockout from this group. Ajax and Liverpool registered their fifth consecutive win in their respective groups. Ajax beat Besiktas 2–1 with two goals from Sebastian Haller, while Liverpool beat Porto 2–0 in Group B. Liverpool took a 10-point lead over second-placed Porto in their group.
In this group, the final round on 7 December is going to be very important as AC Milan and Atlético Madrid, apart from Porto, are in the race to reach the knockouts. AC Milan kept their hopes alive after beating Atletico 1-0 with a goal from Junior Messias in the 87th minute. Milan now has to host Liverpool while Atletico has to play their home matches against Porto.
