Southgate: England players are in a really difficult situation

To handle their participation with the national team, England players were being placed under heavy pressure from their clubs in the middle of an imposing national and international football calendar, said Gareth Southgate.

In their third game, England plays Iceland in seven days at Wembley on Wednesday and one that, with Belgium having paid to some dreams of topping their Nations League group on Sunday, is of little outward significance. It intensifies the workloads of players in a truncated season, and Southgate is acutely aware of the conflicting interests with demand on their time.

“The players want to play for England,” he said according to The Guardian. “They are in a really difficult situation. They are under huge pressure from their clubs. That is going on in the background, for sure. That is the landscape, whether it is made public or not. That is the reality. It manifests itself in different ways but that is what happens.”

Writing about football is one of my favorite things to do. As a football writer, I love the rush of being in the stadium on game day and watching all the action live. It's like no other feeling for me. I'm passionate about writing about it, but until recently I've been doing it as a hobby rather than a profession.
