Milan beats Genoa in extra time in the Coppa Italia
Milan outlasts Genoa in extra time. This was an exciting cup tie, and the game got off to a flying start when Ostigard headed in to give the visitors the lead against the run of play.
The hosts didn’t recover until after half-time, and in that period, Portanova could even have doubled the lead.
However, it much improved Milan after the break, and the introduction of Leao shifted the momentum.
They equalised through a brilliant header from Giroud that is only for Genoa to hold on for an extra time.
The visitors had little energy left to give by this point, though, and Leao’s skewed cross gave Milan the lead before Saelemaekers wrapped things up with a neat finish to send them into the quarter-finals.
MILAN (4-2-3-1): Mike Maignan; Pierre Kalulu
Kyatengwa, Fikayo Tomori, Matteo Gabbia, Theo
Hernandez; Sandro Tonali, Rade Krunic; Junior
Messias, Daniel Maldini, Ante Rebic; Olivier Giroud.
GENOA (3-5-2): Adrian Semper; Leo Ostigard,
Zinho Vanheusden, Johan Vasquez; Silvan Hefti,
Manolo Portanova, Milan Badelj, Filippo Melegoni,
Kelvin Yeboah; Felipe Caicedo, Caleb Ekuban.
Genoa takes the lead against the run of play. Portanova whips an outswinging corner towards the back post, where Ostigard climbs over Hernandez to plant a bullet header beyond a motionless Maignan. 1-0.
Milan finally equalised. Hernandez finds space to send in another pinpoint cross, and Giroud towers over Vanheusden to plant a superb header into the top corner and past a motionless Semper. 1-1.
Since coming on, Leao has caused Hefti all sorts of problems, and he finally makes his dominance count. The attacker teases Hefti before driving to the byline and whipping in a cross that skews over Semper and off the post and in. 2-1.
And Saelemaekers wraps it up for Milan! Hernandez glides away on the break and races into the box before selflessly cutting it back to Saelemaekers, who gleefully rolls it beyond a helpless Semper. 3-1.
