Cagliari 0-1 Milan

Milan emerged victorious after an intense 90 minutes in the rain at the Unipol Domus with their third 1-0 win on the bounce against Cagliari, thanks to Bennacer’s hammered volley after 59 minutes.

The league leaders improved in the second half, dominating possession and creating several chances via different avenues.

Even more, the visitors could have been ahead after Calabria failed to finish a one-on-one opportunity with Cragno.

But Mazzarri could feel his side could have taken a point after Pavoletti’s stooping header struck the crossbar in injury time.

Cagliari’s third defeat in a row without scoring leaves them three points above the drop, while Milan extends their lead at the top to three points.

Starting Lineup:

CAGLIARI XI (3-5-2): Alessio Cragno;

Giorgio Altare, Matteo Lovato, Edoardo Goldaniga;

Joao Pedro, Leonardo Pavoletti.

MILAN XI (4-2-3-1): Mike Maignan;

Davide Calabria, Pierre Kalulu, Fikayo Tomori, Theo Hernandez;

Franck Kessie, Ismael Bennacer; Junior Messias, Brahim Diaz, Rafael Leao; Olivier Giroud.

WHAT A HIT TO BREAK THE DEADLOCK! 1-0 MILAN! Diaz’s low pass into the penalty area from the right finds Giroud, who pops the ball up to the edge of the 18-yard box with his back to goal. Instead, Bennacer answers with a vicious left-footed volley, beating an outstretched Cragno.

Stefano Pioli told Sky Sport Italia in the post-match conference:

“Every game is an essential crossroads now. However, even when we didn’t score in the first half, I liked the team, as we played with quality and intensity.

“Cagliari caused us problems, but that’s inevitable when you have two teams with strong motivation.”

Milan’s triumph was their third straight win by a 1-0 scoreline, and while delighted with the result, Pioli would look to see his team be more ruthless in front of goal.

“We would like to score more and went close again several times today, but the important thing is to win,” he added.

“We’re doing great things, but we also know there are four sides that could still win the Scudetto. So there’s no point looking too far ahead, there’s a long way to go, and we need to concentrate only on our path.”

Milan’s win was tainted, however. There was a commotion between the players after the final whistle, and Pioli confirmed that goalkeeper Mike Maignan had made claims some Cagliari fans racially abused him.

“Mike told me there was racist abuse from behind the goal,” Pioli responded when asked about the scenes at full-time.

“It’s always sad when these things happen. Nobody deserves that.”

So, what’s next for Cagliari and Milan?

Cagliari is in action again after the international break on April 2 when they travel to face Udinese.

Milan returns home on the same day to host Bologna.
