World Cup: Ronald Araujo, a defender for Uruguay, is in danger of missing the World Cup after Barcelona, his club, announced on Monday that he would have surgery to repair a ruptured thigh muscle. According to rumours in Spain, the centre-back will probably be out for two to three months. He would most likely be disqualified from the competition in Qatar, which begins on November 20. The Uruguayan was hurt in the opening minute of a friendly match against Iran last week. He chose surgery over a more conservative course of treatment.

In order to choose the best course of action, Ronald Araujo met with Barcelona head coach Xavi Hernandez and the team’s medical staff on Monday.

The procedure “would be carried out by a doctor, under the guidance of club medical staff, in Turku, Finland.” said Barcelona “A fresh medical statement will be made after the procedure is finished.”

Araujo will be unable to play in important club contests after the surgery, including the Clasico on October 16 and the remainder of the Champions League group stage.

Samuel Umtiti, a defender for Barcelona, chose the other course of action in a comparable circumstance in 2018, helped France win the world championship, but has since been hindered.

Araujo recently agreed to a new contract with Barcelona that would keep him with the team through 2026 and include a $1 billion ($964.9 billion) buyout clause.
