Ricardo Pepi’s omission from USMNT’s World Cup team. After once seeming prepared to start for the USMNT in Qatar, Ricardo Pepi will be left at home for the 2022 World Cup. In place of Pepi, Berhalter chose to introduce Jesus Ferreira, Josh Sargent, and Haji Wright to the striker position for the USMNT’s 26-man roster. The coach admitted that the choice between Wright or Pefok or two of Ferreira, Sargent, and Pepi came down to two separate decisions.

When asked why Josh was playing in the Championship, where two of our opponents are from, where Ricardo faced Josh Sargent and Jesus Ferreira, Berhalter stated, “We thought it was valuable that Josh was playing in that competition the Championship were two of our opponents are coming from.” Although I believe the Dutch league to be excellent, it lacks the physicality that the Premier League or the Championship does. That was a consideration in the choice.

Even though Ricardo Pepi has been in excellent form lately and may deserve to be there, we had to make a decision, and these three strikers were the ones we brought. Pepi, a 19-year-old player for Augsburg, failed to score in any of his 15 league games, so Berhalter’s snub of him wasn’t altogether unexpected. The striker’s chances were not saved by his five goals in eight games while on loan at Groningen.

But if the USMNT attackers perform poorly in Qatar, the choice to leave Pepi behind might still be called into question. At the age of 19, Pepi will begin to focus on upcoming World Cups, beginning with the event that will be held in the United States in 2026. Theoretically, if his development picks up, he will be entering his prime at that point.
