Real Madrid signing a superstar from Chelsea in January. The Barcelona team of Xavi was extensively connected to Chelsea defender Azpilicueta during the summer transfer window. Ultimately, the trade did not happen because Azpilicueta extended his contract with the Blues after Barca postponed their approach as a result of Jules Kounde‘s transfer. The Spaniard has had trouble getting into games in west London since his extension, playing just 952 minutes of football in 17 games across various competitions.

According to reports, Real Madrid wants to sign the star player in January in order to entice him away from Stamford Bridge. They lack a natural replacement for Daniel Carvajal at right back, with Lucas Vazquez serving as a stand-in. Azpilicueta’s versatility and the fact that he can also play as a center-back are also said to have Madrid impressed.

In the Spanish national team, Azpilicueta frequently starts ahead of Carvajal since head coach Luis Enrique likes to switch up his right-backs occasionally. If Chelsea accepts their offer, Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti might follow a similar strategy there. Madrid is prepared to pay the Pensioners €10 million for their captain, according to the aforementioned source. Azpilicueta has played 493 times for the Stamford Bridge team since joining them in 2012, contributing 56 assists and 17 goals throughout all competitions.
