Euphoria blended with anxiety, lit up the Champs-Elysées with cheers and flares, and drew tear gas, as  France celebrated Paris Saint-Germain’s historic semi-final win in the Champions League.

Police arrested 36 people in Paris after swarms at the foot of the Arc de Triomphe had metastasized into sporadic unrest, but no major harm was reported and the mood was largely festive.

For the first time since 1993 after Marseille PSG eventually made it to the final of the European elite club competition smashing Leipzig 3-0 on Tuesday. Just one French team won the championship, and it was a couple of decades ago.

All eyes now turn to fellow French club Lyon after the long-awaited triumph dominated the news and social networks. In the second semi-final, Lyon will face the five-time champion Bayern Munich on Wednesday.

French Prime Minister Jean Castex thanked the team by tweeting, “Paris is magic!”

Due to coronavirus pandemic, the final of the mini-tournament will be held behind closed doors in Lisbon on Sunday.

Writing about football is one of my favorite things to do. As a football writer, I love the rush of being in the stadium on game day and watching all the action live. It's like no other feeling for me. I'm passionate about writing about it, but until recently I've been doing it as a hobby rather than a profession.
