Following Sunday’s 8-0 WSL loss to Spurs, Hope Powell has resigned as manager of Brighton with immediate effect. Following her team’s 8-0 thrashing by Spurs in the Women’s Super League, which put them 11th in the standings and in front of only Leicester, who have yet to earn a point, Powell has announced her immediate resignation after five years in charge.

We’ve had a really hard start to the new season with many changes to our squad and outcomes not going as we had all wanted, Powell stated in a statement issued through the team. The humiliating loss to Tottenham on Sunday at home was especially depressing. We have advanced significantly as a club over the past five years, but I believe the time is right for me to leave so that a new coach can lead the squad ahead while there is still plenty of Super League action left this year.

Hope’s impact on the growth of women’s and girls’ football at our club and for the women’s game in this country cannot be overstated, said Michelle Walder, chair of the board for Brighton & Hove Albion’s women’s and girls’ football club. Hope helped establish Brighton & Hove Albion in the Women’s Super League, oversaw the development of a brand-new, cutting-edge training facility for our club’s women’s and girls’ teams, and surely encouraged future generations of young girls to take up the sport of football.

Following a sluggish start to the 2022–23 season, a weekend 8–0 thrashing at the cost of Spurs was the latest in a succession of dismal performances. The Seagulls have only scored twice, won once, and conceded 19 goals. In the 2020–21 WSL season, Powel, a key player in the development of women’s football, guided Brighton to a sixth-place finish. While the team looks for Powell’s replacement, Amy Merricks will serve as the temporary coach for this weekend’s game against West Ham.
