Sevilla La Liga hopes faced a ruinous setback

Sevilla’s hopes of winning the Spanish football league La Liga title have come as a shock as they lost 1–0 to Athletic Bilbao. Sevilla lost 1-0 to Athletic Bilbao at home on Monday, dealing a near-fatal blow to their La Liga title hopes.

When it seemed that the match would end in a goalless draw, Inaki Williams broke the hopes of getting close to Sevilla’s top team by scoring the winning goal for Athletic in the 90th minute. Athletic countered and striker Inaki Williams displayed patience to raise the ball into the top corner, handing Julen Lopetegui’s side a late body blow.

The goal handed Sevilla their first loss since March 6 and ended a five-game winning streak in La Liga, which had placed them among the title contenders.

Sevilla is still six points behind top-ranked Atletico Madrid, but with only four rounds remaining, Monday’s win could put them among four strong contenders. Real Madrid and Barcelona are also strong contenders for the title and are just two points behind Atlético Madrid.

Sevilla still holds a 17 point lead over fifth-ranked Realm Sociedad and has secured their place in the Champions League for the next season. Athletic has finished ninth and is still a contender for a place in the Europa League.
