Newcastle takes another step towards Premier League survival with a 2-1 win over Brighton and Hove Albion at St James’ Park.

First-half goals from Ryan Fraser and Fabian Schar put the Magpies in command, but Lewis Dunk made matters uncomfortable in the second period as he headed home from close range.

Despite putting the home side under pressure, Graham Potter’s men could not find a leveller and slumped to their fourth-straight Premier League defeat.

Goals:

1-0. The Magpies took the lead against the run of play as Fraser scored on the rebound. He starts the move with an incisive pass to Murphy, who speeds away from Cucurella. The winger strikes a low effort at goal, but it strikes the left post. However, fortune is on the side of Newcastle as the rebound falls to Fraser, and he dispatches a pinpoint strike into the bottom-left corner.

2-0. The defender rises at the near post to plant a header past Sanchez into the bottom-right corner. Fraser delivers the money from the right flank from a free-kick. Schar climbs ahead of Welbeck to direct a powerful header that erupts through the hands of Sanchez into the back of the net. What a start for Newcastle.

2-1. The visitors are back in the game as Dunk rises to head home from close range. Gross sends a pinpoint cross into the box from the left corner flag, and Dunk moves ahead of Wood to plant a header past the stranded Dubravka.
