It was claimed that to seal his move to Chelsea, Timo Werner will snub the August Champions League campaign of the club, but Julian Nagelsmann, boss of Leipzig, poured cold water.

The German hitman is expected to complete the move this week after the Premier League outfit has paid its £53million release clause, who has agreed to a deal with the Blues and Bild has reported abandoning the European fixtures on the Bundesliga side to head to Stamford Bridge.

In August quarter-finals are set to take place in a World Cup-style tournament, in which Nagelsmann is planning to have Timo Werner in his squad and he was firm in his belief that Werner is still a player in Leipzig.

‘He is in my plans to play the Champions League, as usual at the moment,’ he said. ‘He’s our player and nobody else has signed for him.’

‘Its importance is extraordinary for RB Leipzig. He has an incredibly good goalscoring rate that you’re always hoping a striker for.’

‘The two parties are going to sit down and see what is going to happen next,’ he added. ‘Regulations are not currently in place.’

Leipzig’s trip to the Champions League saw them win their group against Zenit St Petersburg, Benfica, and Lyon, and in the round of 16, they thumped Tottenham 4-0 overall.

Werner scored four goals, with 32 strikes in all competitions that left him highly sought-after by the elite in Europe, during that run. Werner is keen to move as quickly as possible to integrate into the squad of Frank Lampard to West London, and it seems that Chelsea has won the race for his signature.

He has started all six games for Leipzig, since the restart of Bundesliga, scoring four times-with a hat-trick coming up against Mainz.
