Martinez helped Dybala with penalty advice at World Cup. In the World Cup final shootout victory for Argentina against France, Paulo Dybala disclosed that Emiliano Martinez provided him with important penalty instruction. Argentina won the Qatar 2022 tournament after defeating France on penalties following a thrilling 120-minute 3-3 draw between the two teams.

To participate in the shootout, Dybala was substituted in the waning seconds of extra time. From 12 yards out, he shot perfectly into the middle of the goal past France goalkeeper Hugo Lloris. However, the Roma player has given thanks to Martinez for his successful penalty, stating that if it weren’t for the Argentine goalkeeper’s intervention, he would have attempted to go to the left corner that Lloris dove towards.

In Buenos Aires, Dybala addressed the crowd and said: “I had to maintain as much composure as I could. Because you don’t play a World Cup final every day, it is not simple. I had to walk far to get to the ball. It was inconceivably prolonged. Dibu [Martinez] and I had a conversation. After they missed, he encouraged me to shoot down the middle. They constantly dive. When the goalkeeper dove to that side, I was ready to go for it, but then I heard what my colleague had to say. I made a last-minute alteration. I paid attention to Dibu (Martinez) since someone else had already made a mistake, and he advised me to shoot down the middle, where it would be a goal.”

In front of the crowd in Buenos Aires, Dybala said: “I had to be as composed as I possibly could. It is difficult because World Cup finals are not played every day. To get to the ball, I had to travel far. It dragged on inexplicably. I spoke with Dibu [Martinez] about something. He had urged me to shoot down the center after they had missed. They dive all the time. I was prepared to take the shot when the goalkeeper dove to that side, but I held off after hearing what my colleague had to say. I changed something at the last minute. Given that someone else had already erred, I paid close heed to Dibu (Martinez), who encouraged me to shoot down the middle, where it would serve as a goal.”
