Manchester United began their pre-season schedule with a 2-1 victory over Derby County, managed by Wayne Rooney. Thanks to Facundo Pellistri’s decisive goal which helped Manchester United to win their pre-season preparations with a 2-1 victory over Wayne Rooney’s Derby County.

Rooney took over as a manager in November 2020 replacing Phillip Cocu and for the first time, he managed against his former club. However, it was understandable that the United side looked unfamiliar. Due to Euro 2020 and Copa America, Red Devils coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was missing 16 players. Also, several players were scheduled to play in the Olympics.

Tom Heaton started in goal making and as a result of his return to the club, he made an important save from point-blank range just before the end of a first-half that appeared to be a struggle due to the heat.

However, United took the 1-0 lead at the break Tahith Chong capitalized on a defensive blunder and bundled in from close range after seeing his initial chip attempt blocked back on to him. Chong is set to join Derby County’s Championship rivals Birmingham City on loan.

Solskjaer made as many as nine substitutions at halftime, with only Axel Tuanzebe and Teden Mengi remaining in the lineup. Jesse Lingard, Andreas Pereira, Nemanja Matic, Lee Grant, and Alex Telles were among those called up, with a number of youngsters also included.

Later Manchester United drove the scoreboard with a 2-0 lead thanks to the efforts of two of the young hopefuls. For Derby, Colin Kazim-Richards pulled one back from distance but Pellistri’s well-taken goal was enough to give United a winning start to their pre-season. The 90 minutes Derby vs Manchester United match ended in a 1-2 score.

Writing about football is one of my favorite things to do. As a football writer, I love the rush of being in the stadium on game day and watching all the action live. It's like no other feeling for me. I'm passionate about writing about it, but until recently I've been doing it as a hobby rather than a profession.
