After the football news of a closeted Premier League footballer’s open letter surfaced last year, Josh Cavallo came out. He’s the only openly gay top-flight footballer in the whole world of football now, because he plays for Australia’s A-League.
Josh Cavallo Came Out – He’s the Only Openly Gay Top-flight Footballer
Josh Cavallo from Adelaide United has come out as gay, making him the world’s first out, gay top-flight male footballer.
The 21-year-old has thus become the world’s only openly homosexual male top-flight footballer, which is a thrilling yet chilling prospect.
Cavallo, an Australian A-League player, has come out as homosexual in a video. He posted this coming out video along with an open letter posted on social media.
In his video, he said: “There’s something personal that I need to share with everyone. I am a footballer and I am gay.”
His open letter, which accompanies this video, stated: “It’s been a journey to get to this point in my life, but I couldn’t be happier with my decision to come out. I have been fighting my sexuality for six years now and I’m glad I can put that to rest.
“Growing up, I always felt the need to hide myself because I was ashamed. Ashamed I would never be able to do what I loved and be gay. Hiding who I truly am, to pursue a dream I always wished for as a kid, to play football and be treated equally never felt like a reality.”
The hope is that this revelation will not affect his promising journey as a footballer.
Instead, we wish Josh Cavallo the best happiness and a bright journey ahead. And, of course, we must honour and admire his courage to be the first gay footballer to come out. He has surely inspired many people to find bravery to live their truths, especially people in the football community.
