Former Barcelona and Valencia center-back Jeremy Mathieu suffered a severe knee injury in training this week and retired from football.
At the end of June, the ex-French international moves out of contract with the current side Sporting Lisbon, but the Portuguese club has agreed to terminate their deal with each other, according to Mundo Deportivo reports.
After arriving at French club Sochaux through the youth ranks, the 36-year-old made 582 senior appearances in a 16-year career, before joining Toulouse in 2005.
Before heading to Camp Nou in 2014, he moved on to Valencia in 2009, making 126 appearances in La Liga with Los Che.
Prior to departing Sporting Lisbon in 2017 on a free transfer, Mathieu has been a regular for La Blaugrana in both their 2015 and 2016 La Liga title wins.
Although he turned 33 before moving to Portugal, he also retained a regular place in their side, winning two Portuguese Cups in 2017 and 2018.
