Odisha FC thrashed NorthEast United FC 1-0 in an Indian Super League game played at the Tilak Maidan Stadium on Friday on the back of a second half goal by Jonathas Cristian. Substitute Jonathas de Jesus gave Odisha the lead in the 81st minute of the match with the help of another substitute Thoiba Singh, which lasted till the last whistle of the football match.
With this win, the team has moved up to the second position in the points table behind Mumbai City FC. This is Odisha’s third win and now has nine points from four matches while Mumbai has 12 points from five matches.
NorthEast slipped to ninth place with four points from five matches. NorthEast United started off aggressively in this match but the Odisha team soon established their dominance. Both the teams made several attempts to score but the success came to Cristian.
In the first half, NorthEast United could not score despite dominating and Odisha FC somehow managed to keep the scoreline 0-0. Eight attempts were made towards NorthEast but not a single one of its players was on target. The trio of NorthEast forwards Deshorn Brown, Rochharjela, Hermann Santana kept on missing opportunities time and again. Deshorn Brown had the most chances of scoring four goals in the match but every time he could not control the shot from the left foot. From the midfield, Sehnaaz Singh, Khassa Kamara and Matthias Correur made frequent chances to test Odisha FC’s defence.
The first goal of the match came in the 81st minute from a header from Jonathas Cristian of Odisha. Midfielder Thoiba Singh, who came in as a replacement player, entered the penalty box after hitting his defenders from the left flank and lobbed the cross towards the center from there, and the Brazilian forward, who landed as a substitute, hit the ball into the goalpost with a header.
