Serge Gnabry will turn out for FC Bayern in the number 7 shirt from next season, so far he has worn the number 22. Franck Ribéry had worn number 7 for eleven years and the number rested last season. Gnabry said to the official Bayern site, “I’m very happy to be wearing this number in the future. Franck has always pleased the fans-and that motivates me all the more.”
Among others, Germany’s international was also a big hit in number 22 in the triple-winning season, it formed the deadliest partnership in the Champions League with Robert Lewandowski (24 goals in all). In the end, Gnabry scored nine goals including his historic four-goal run in a 7-2 win over Tottenham Hotspur and 2 important first goals in a 3-0 semi-final.
The number 7 shirt has graced the backs of a number of impressive names in the history of FC Bayern. As well as Ribéry and Mehmet Scholl, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, chairman of the FCB, played there between 1975 and 1978, and Hansi Flick, current head coach of Gnabry, wore it in the 1986/87 seasons.
