Barcelona center-back Gerard Pique damaged his knee in Saturday’s loss to Atletico Madrid.
Pique is expected to face a six-month stay on the sidelines.
An hour after Barca’s 1-0 La Liga defeat at the Wanda Metropolitano, the Spain international was pulled off after a collision with Angel Correa.
With Barca announcing soon after the match that he had suffered a sprain, Pique was in tears as he left the pitch.
To identify the true seriousness of the injury, a scan is planned for Sunday.
Spanish outlet Sport says that effectively ruling him out of the remainder of the campaign, Barca was terrified of being without the 33-year-old before May.
