Ronald Koeman would be named Barcelona’s new head coach, president Josep Maria Bartomeu announced just nine months after he rejected the position.
Josep Maria Bartomeu hopes that when Koeman is appointed as head coach, with the ‘Dream Team’ he will be able to bring some experience back to Barcelona.
After Quique Setien was sacked following Bayern Munich’s 8-2 Champions League loss, former Barca defender Koeman arrived in town on Monday to sign a deal as a successor to the previous head coach.
Koeman has been in charge of the Netherlands since 2018.
Scoring the winner against Sampdoria as Barca became European champions for the first time in 1992, Koeman was part of Johan Cruyff’s immensely successful side that came to be regarded as the ‘Dream Team.’
Bartomeu hopes that the 57-year-old will be able to restore some luster to a Barca dressing room that will reel from a sad end to a deceptive season.
“These days, everything comes out in the press,” he said to Barca TV. “If nothing goes wrong, Koeman will be the coach we’ll announce who will lead this team and these players forward, with a different project and with a coach whom the fans know well, not only as a player but also as a coach.”
“We’re backing him because we know him really well in terms of how he is and how he thinks and how his teams play, but also because of his experience, for being in Johan Cruyff’s ‘Dream Team’. He knows Barca and the way to understand football.”
