Zorc: “In the summer we will stop working with Mario Goetze”

Mario Goetze scored the winning goal in the 2014 World Cup final, he will be leaving at the end of the season, Sports director Michael Zorc of Borussia Dortmund confirmed on Saturday.

“In the summer we will stop working with Mario Goetze,” Zorc told Sky before the Bundesliga game to Wolfsburg on Saturday.”

“After a constructive conversation this is a joint decision. Mario is a nice guy.

The decision caps a frustrating season for the 27-year-old assailant, who starts this term with only five leagues.”

To shut a 1-0 victory over Argentina at Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, Goetze inscribed himself into German football folklore by volleying across at home during extra time in the 2014 World Cup final.

To replicate the displays that prompted former German FA technical director Matthias Sammer to describe him as “one of the best talents we’ve ever had,” Goetze struggled six years.

In 2011 and 2012 Goetze had come through the academy and helped Dortmund win the league and cup double, before he left in 2013 for Bayern Munich.

In 2016 he returned to Dortmund but missed to hold down a first-team spot in Munich. For several months the following year, a debilitating metabolic disorder subsequently sidelined him.

Goetze has featured sparingly since Erling Braut Haaland ‘s arrival in January and made his 200th appearance for Dortmund on the opening day of this season.

While Germany’s legend Lothar Matthaeus urged him to quit the Bundesliga to reboot his career last month, it would be “difficult” for Goetze to win a place, admitted Dortmund coach Lucien Favre on Friday.

“His way of playing football is no longer in demand today,” Matthaeus wrote to Sky in a column.

“He lacks the speed above all to keep up with the football Dortmund and many other top clubs play. It may well be that Italy would be a suitable league for him,” Matthaeus added.
