The Spanish national football team has their World Cup qualification in their own hands moving into the last round of games after winning 1-0 in Greece.
Luis Enrique’s team jumped ahead of previous Group B leaders Sweden, who fell 2-0 in Georgia earlier on Thursday. Spain had never lost in four previous games with Greece, and a penalty from Pablo Sarabia in the first half extended that record to four wins and one draw. If they can escape defeating Sweden on Sunday in Seville, they will qualify for Qatar 2022.
Luis Enrique’s Spain beat Greece 1-0 to move to the top of Group B, leapfrogging Sweden. The difference-maker was Pablo Sarabia’s penalty, which put the beaten Euro 2020 semi-finalists a point ahead of Sweden, who lost 2-0 away to Georgia.

Spain head coach Luis Enrique said, “We are in a good situation. We had good news before we started this game [with Sweden’s loss]. We deserved the win. In terms of attitude, my players did well and showed ambition. But it’s difficult to play away from home and when you have pressure to get a result. I’m very happy”.
“Of course I believe that on Sunday we will get direct qualification to the World Cup. We are facing a team that had a good European Championship and have done well in qualifying. A draw against Sweden will be enough for us to qualify but I can assure you we will go out for the win.”
