to overcome Romania 2-1 in Hamburg, Germany came from behind, moving six points clear at the top of World Cup qualification Group J. Thomas Muller scored the game’s winning goal. The hosts went behind to Ianis Hagi’s superb individual effort after just nine minutes at the Volksparkstadio.
However, Serge Gnabry’s sixth goal of the qualifying campaign levelled the score, with Germany completing the turnaround late. Nine minutes from time, Hansi Flick’s side did so, with substitute Muller celebrating his 107th international cap by turning home a corner at the far post.
Muller, who turned 32 last month, showed that his penalty-area reflexes are still razor-sharp. The Bayern Munich forward climbed into seventh place on Germany’s all-time appearances list and was in the right place at the right time to score the game-winning goal.
