Not a thrilling game for Spain vs Greece in the first leg of the 2022 World Cup qualifiers. The hosts obviously had the upper hand, but not much came of it. The Spaniards fired four shots at the Greek goal in the first half, one of them scored by Alvaro Morata was accurate.
The Juventus striker put La Roja in the lead by taking advantage of Koke’s pass. The hosts had as much as 80 percent ball possession.
The Greeks moved deeply and, colloquially speaking, “walled up” access to their own goal. It seemed that Morata’s goal would break the wall and Enrique’s players would increase the score in the second half, but they failed.
Precision and creativity in the offensive continued to fail. At the break, Enrique changed Sergio Ramos and replaced by Inigo Martinez, and in the 56th minute, it was he who fouled Giorgos Masouras in the penalty area.
Captain Anastasios Bakasetas stepped up to the eleven and beat Unai Simon with a confident shot. In the entire game, Spain had only two shots on target! It was an embarrassment for La Roja. And the Greeks? They won a valuable point on the territory of the favorite to win the group.
Spain – Greece 1-1 (1-0)
Goals: Morata (33),Bakasetas(57p).
