To advance to the final eight of the Women’s Olympic Tournament Sweden eventually defeated Australia, while the Netherlands tied Brazil 3-3.
GROUP E – Beckie packs for Canada, while GB struggles
In a ten-minute span, Janine Beckie scored twice between halves to give Canada a 2-0 lead over Chile. Just before the hour mark Karen Araya scored a penalty, but the Canadians had done enough to secure the win.
Team GB advanced with a 1-0 victory over Japan as Ellen White scored three goals in two games. A header from Lucy Bronze’s cross in the second half was enough to secure all three points.
GROUP F – China and Zambia share eight goals, while the Netherlands and Brazil share six.
China secured a 3-2 win over Zambia with Wang Shuang’s hat-trick in the first half.
Racheal Kundananji had equalised before Shuang scored twice in a row, before Barbra Banda put the Africans back in it. As Zambia rallied to take a 4-3 lead Banda went on to win her second treble of the tournament, only for Shuang to equalize from the spot before China had Qingtong Li sent off in the dying minutes.
GROUP G – Sweden advances, while the United States falters.
Australia overcame a 1-0 deficit against Sweden as Sam Kerr scored twice but missed a penalty. Lina Hurtig tied the game at 2-2, and before Stina Blackstenius extended the lead to 4-2 in the final ten minutes Fridolina Rolfo scored her second goal of the game.
After the Americans were stunned by the Swedes’ loss Rose Lavelle gave the United States a ten-minute lead over New Zealand. Lindsey Horan doubled the lead just before halftime, and Abby Erceg later gave up an own goal. Betsy Hassett responded with a goal, sparking the US to three more through Christen Press, Alex Morgan, and a Catherine Bott own-goal.
