Wales captain Gareth Bale set up Aaron Ramsey and Connor Roberts on Wednesday for a 2-0 victory over Turkey in their Group A match at the Baku Olympic Stadium to take a crucial step in qualifying for the elimination stages of the European Championship.
Ramsey failed to create two chances at the start of the first half, but scored just before the break when he took Bale’s perfect ball over the defense to the chest and passed it to the goalkeeper.
Wales could have doubled the lead when Bale was stopped by Zeki Celik and received a penalty, but the Welsh captain abandoned the attempt. Wales also scored with injury when a corner was short and Connor Roberts was on hand to seal a pass from the Bales in front of goalkeeper Ugurcan Cakir. After the match, Bale said, “I’m happy with the win. We worked hard, we took off our socks as usual.”
Ramsey was twice selected by Bale with brilliant passing dividing the defense but failed to score both times, with Cakir disallowing it from a tight angle in the sixth minute and then a shot over the bar in the 24th. Removed. There was no luck in the third minute and in the 42nd minute, Bale swam a brilliant cross for Ramsey, who led the ball perfectly and came down to Cakir.
Captain Burak Yilmaz, who missed a good chance in the first half, should have scored 10 minutes after the restart when he was left completely unmarked in front of the Welsh gate, but three over the crossbar.
Wales found space to counter and Ramsey’s short shot was blocked before Bale was brought down inside the box to win the hit on the spot every hour. But the 31-year-old’s effort flew up and down to keep the Turks in the game, who forced a fine defense from goalkeeper Danny Ward on a Merih Demiral header in the 87th minute.
With the Turks running out of steam during stoppage, Bale cut to feed Roberts for the second goal. “We are in a great position now. If you had given us 4 points at the start, we would have cut off your hand,” Bell said while paying tribute to the Welsh fans, who far outnumbered the Turks in the stadium.
