Villarreal won Europa League final defeating Manchester United

Villarreal won the Europa League football tournament title by beating Manchester United 11–10 in a thrilling penalty shootout. United goalkeeper David De Gea failed to perform well in the penalty shootout. He could not stop the shot of any player of Villarreal and finally failed to score.

In the regular game, Gerard Moreno scored in the 29th minute for Villarreal in the set time to put his team ahead but Edinson Cavani scored the goal in the 55th minute. Both teams were tied 1–1 after regular time and overtime, followed by a shootout which was prolonged. In the end, the goalkeepers of both teams had to come to collect the penalty. Villarreal’s goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli was successful in scoring on this. After this, Rulli stopped Di Gea’s weak shot. After saving the goal, Rulli lay down on the field and the whole team reached him.

Spain’s Villarreal won a major trophy for the first time in its 98-year history. Not only this, they achieved this title by defeating the top club of European football in the final. This also earned them a place in the Champions League for the next season while finishing seventh in the Spanish League La Liga.

This is the fourth Europa League title by Villarreal coach Unai Emery. Prior to this, he won this title as the coach of Sevilla from 2014 to 2016.
