In the opening of La Liga’s new season, the struggle of Villarreal continued with a 0-0 draw against Granada played on Monday. Without a win, it was Villarreal’s seventh consecutive opening football match in the Spanish league and it did not start the season with a win at home in six attempts.
The La Sermica stadium hosted a crowd of around 7,000 after Spanish health officials allowed stadiums to have up to 40% capacity as the league resumes. Around 5,000 were allowed in Villarreal’s games at the end of last season.
Villarreal was held to a frustrating goalless 0-0 draw by Granada in their 2021/22 La Liga season opener at home in the 90 minutes match time. The Yellow Submarine started brightly, with summer signing Aissa Mandi poking just wide and Yeremi Pino being denied by Aaron Escandell. Villarreal’s chances of grabbing a late winner were effectively ended when Juan Foyth was sent off for a second yellow card in the final minutes.
Villarreal will next play against newly-promoted Espanyol this weekend, while Granada hosts Valencia. Last season the Yellow submarines became UEFA Europa League champions defeating Manchester United in the finals. Villarreal lost in a shootout against Chelsea in the UEFA Super Cup. Unai Emery’s team finished seventh in the Spanish league in the previous term.
Granada, which finished ninth in the league last season, won a draw on debut from former Spanish national team coach Roberto Moreno. Also on Monday, Elche and Athletic Bilbao drew 0–0 in a rematch of last season’s final round match, when Elche secured their place in the First Division with a 2–0 home win. Athletic had lost their last three openers of the league at home.
