Ukraine pushed Sweden out of Euro Cup tournament

Artem Dovbyk’s header in the 121st minute sent Ukraine into a Euro 2020 quarter-final clash with England on Saturday as they beat Sweden 2-1 after extra time in Glasgow. Ukraine advanced to the final of 16, despite scoring just three points in the group stage, qualifying in part because Sweden defeated Poland at the top of Group E ahead of Spain. But Andriy Shevchenko’s team was determined to show that they deserved their place in the playoffs, while Oleksandr Zinchenko ousted them in the early lead.

Emil Forsberg’s deflected shot leveled Sweden before the break, and midfielder RB Leipzig hit the woodwork twice in the second half. Swede Robin Olsson was forced into the first defense to deny Roman Yaremchuk after being thrown by the impressive Andriy Yarmolenko.

The West Ham United winger was the driving force behind all tournaments in his country, scoring or assisting in all but six goals. Yarmolenko’s teasing cross with his left foot fell favorably for Zinchenko in the 27th minute, and the Manchester City man fired a low shot that had too much power for Olsson.

This was the first time Sweden had watched all tournaments, but Janne Andersson‘s men answered the question well of whether they could watch a game after their defensive discipline shone in the group stage.

Forsberg was as impressive for Sweden as Yarmolenko for Ukraine and equalized two minutes before the break with the fourth goal of the tournament. Opportunities came and went for both sides, as a fun second half from start to finish was born.

Ukraine survived to take the game in overtime and was given a golden chance of reaching the last eight of a major tournament for the second time as an independent nation when Sweden was reduced to 10 men.

Danielson won the ball, but then made a dangerous challenge on Artem Besedin, which forced the Dynamo Kyiv striker to send out. Yarmolenko also had to convert at half-time, which would be a concern for Shevchenko if Ukraine has a chance to shock England in Rome. But his replacement, Dovbyk, was a hero, as he picked the right moment to score his first international goal.
