Juventus’ Cristiano Ronaldo was left out in favor of Barcelona’s Lionel Messi, although he made the same number of appearances – eight – and scored more goals (four to three).
Making nine appearances on their way to the quarter-final in the tournament, Atalanta captain Alejandro ‘Papu’ Gomez was the only representative of Serie A.
