Turkish giants Galatasaray to lock horns with local rivals for the signing of Mario Mandzukic

The latest word around the rumour mill is that Turkish Super Lig club Galatasaray are currently involved in a heated transfer race for the signing of former Juventus star Mario Mandzukic.

Mandzukic, who currently plies his trade for Qatar-based side Al Duhail, left Juventus on a free transfer in January 2020 after serving the Italian giants for five seasons. He has also played for Atletico Madrid, Bayern Munich, VfL Wolfsburg and Dinamo Zagreb at various stages during his 24-year-long professional career.

On Saturday, it was Istanbul’s that wrote that Galatasaray will be locking horns with both Besiktas and Fenerbahce, who also feature in the Turkish Super Lig, for his signing. The Turkish news agency adds that the club are currently in talks with their star striker Radamel Falcao over a possible parting because of their inability to cope with his high wages.

If Falcao decided to leave the club, Mandzukic would hence become the No.1 choice to replace him, according to the report. The Croatian star, on his part, is rumoured to be unhappy with the quality of the team and the Qatar Stars League that welcomed him upon his arrival at Al-Duhail, as a result of which he has expressed interest to return to Europe to continue his professional career.

The 33-year-old centre forward has played 482 professional club matches so far in his career, and has scored 189 goals and recorded 86 assists. He has won one Champions League (Bayern), one Spanish Super Cup (Atletico), two Bundesliga titles, two German Cups, one German Super Cup (all Bayern), four Serie A titles, three Italian Cups, two Italian Super Cups (all Juventus), one FIFA Club World Cup and one UEFA Super Cup (both Bayern.

Mandzukic was also the 2018 FIFA World Cup runner-up with the Croatian national team.
