Jose Mourinho faced an unwanted experience for the first time when in their Premier League season opener game his side went down 1-0 to Everton.
“The goal was a little strange. It’s not an explanation for the outcome or loss or performance. It’s amazing to take a penalty at least five meters away with so many referees on the field and on the side [where the foul was],” Mourinho said to Sky Sports.
“Five meters before the goal I was telling the referees, the location of our backline and the angle of the cross make a big difference.”
When asked if his team should have talked to the referee before the free-kick was taken, Mourinho said: “Right now we have talks on Zoom asking the players not to appeal to officials. There’s the referee, the guys in VAR are in touch with him, Graham Scott the fourth official is there.”
