The UEFA Champions League Matchday 5 Goal of the Week results have been revealed. Thiago Alcantara, a midfielder for Liverpool, has been awarded Goal of the week by UEFA following his stunning goal against Porto on Wednesday, which pushed the football team on their way to a Champions League 2-0 win.
Silvan Hefti’s (Young Boys) accurate strike from 26 meters into the back of Atalanta’s net, Robert Lewandowski’s (Bayern Munich) bicycle kick against Dynamo Kyiv and Pedro Gonsalves’ (Sporting) individual effort against Dortmund were also up for the award. However, Liverpool midfielder Thiago Alcantara’s stunner against Porto has been voted the best, UEFA.com reports.
The Reds manager Jurgen Klopp hailed Alcantara’s Thunderball in the second half. “We had bigger chances than that in the game, but we scored with that situation because it was just an incredible goal. Whoever sees Thiago in training knows he has the technique to do it, but even with this technique it doesn’t happen constantly that he can fire such a thunderball. It was good timing, to be honest,” Klopp said.
“We needed some luck. (Porto) came through and had some big chances but didn’t score … We scored twice and controlled the game in the second half much better. So, I’m really pleased about the performance,” the coach added. The Spaniard was also named Man of the Match, making this his best outing for Liverpool so far.
