Atlético Madrid made their way into the last-16 of the Champions League after beating Porto 3-1 in a match that saw three players receive red cards, clashes on the field and three last-minute goals. Porto also had a chance to qualify as the team was one point ahead of Atletico and AC Milan. Liverpool beat Milan 2–1 for their sixth consecutive win. In such a situation, the match between Porto and Atletico became important. Two players from Atletico and one from Porto had to leave the field in the second half due to red cards.
Antoine Griezmann gave Atletico the lead in the 56th minute. Angel Correa and Rodrigo de Paul scored after 90 minutes of play to give Atletico a 3-0 lead. Porto then got a penalty in the last minute, which was converted on a goal by Sergio Oliveira.
Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe scored twice as Paris Saint-Germain beat Club Brugge 4-1 in the Champions League. Manchester City, however, lost 1-2 to RB Leipzig in Group A. City finished on top of the group, while PSG managed to advance as the second-placed team. Mbappe scored in the second and seventh minutes to put PSG ahead 2-0. Messi scored the third and fourth goals for PSG in the 38th and 76th minutes.
PSG striker Mbappe broke his own team’s star player Messi’s record by scoring two goals in the first 10 minutes. Mbappe became the youngest player in the history of the Champions League to score the first 30 goals by netting two goals against Brugge. The Frenchman achieved this feat at the age of 22, while Messi was 23 years old when he made this record in 2010
In other Champions League matches, Ajax beat Sporting 4-2 to register their sixth consecutive win in Group C. Ajax striker Sebastian Haller holds the record for scoring goals in all matches. Sporting managed to qualify by finishing second despite the defeat. Real Madrid beat Inter Milan 2-0 in Group D. Both these teams had already secured their place in the last-16.
