Former Liverpool player and Rangers head coach Steven Gerrard has shared his belief on Gareth Southgate’s decision not to invite Reds defender Trent Alexander-Arnold to England’s March games.
“I know for a fact that I will always be there for Trent. It goes without saying that I am ready to be there for him at any time of the day or night. I won’t make the first move. Trent is a man who understands where he is,” Gerrard said to The Athletic.
“Gareth Southgate makes the decisions. I don’t have to agree with them. But I’m not the England coach. I think Trent is the best right-back in the country.”
“When I was a player I learned that you can’t always be 10 out of 10 ready. When a slump starts, you need support, love, and attention from the coach. That means more than support from any other person. So I was surprised by this decision, but that’s my opinion and it’s not that important in this matter.”
“Trent is a world-class right-back and is the best right-back in this country. We have produced some excellent right defenders. But I am ready to support Trent and any other Liverpool player at any time.”
