Spain crushed Slovakia with five over zero goals in Euro 2020

Spain beat Slovakia 5-0 on Wednesday in their first win at Euro 2020, which was set in motion by a catastrophic goal by goalkeeper Martin Dubravka. Aymeric Laporte scored the second goal in the first break of the football match before Pablo Sarabia’s second-half goal, a goal from Ferran Torres and Juraj Kucka, ended an emphatic win that placed them in second place in Group E, five points behind Sweden.

Dubravka made an amazing save to avoid a penalty from Alvaro Morata but gave Spain the lead after half an hour when he fired a shot from Sarabia’s crossbar to put the ball into his own goal and returned to goal.

The goal, which came after a foul pass from Slovakia’s shaky defence, put to rest any nerve that had dealt a blow to Spain after disappointing draws with Sweden and Poland and continued to register their biggest wins of the tournament.

The impressive captain Sergio Busquets returned in one of four changes, although there was a familiar feeling as Spain missed several opening chances including a penalty, the fifth shot on the spot they failed to convert and Gerard Moreno’s strike against Poland.

It took Dubravka’s moment of madness for the Spaniards to take the lead, but he couldn’t go after that, and having missed so many clear chances in all three games, did practically everything possible. Laporte took the lead after a corner kick in a Gerard Moreno corner that was executed well by Sarabia after 56 minutes.

Ferran added a festive mood by scoring with an elegant wheel as he came off the bench, turning a cross from Sarabia, while his substitute teammate Pau Torres played a major role in the fifth low goal, which Slovakia scored. It sealed a miserable afternoon for Slovakia, who were hoping to enter the play-offs for the second time in their second appearance at Euros, but were overwhelmed by a Spanish team that finally found its feet.

Luis Enrique’s team will take on Croatia in Copenhagen on Monday, while Slovakia finished third on three points and are heading home with a goal difference of minus five. Watch football highlights of the match where Spain beat Slovakia.
