England head coach Gareth Southgate has explained the big 5-0 win over San Marino in World Cup 2022 qualifying.
“We played as well as we could. I’m very pleased with our pressing when we lost the ball. It underlined the team’s spirit for the whole 90 minutes. Of course, this is an opponent we have to beat, but the boys did a great job,” said Southgate to BBC.
“Many players showed themselves well. It would be hard to pick just one. The midfielders moved the ball very well. I am very happy with Phillips. He handled the ball well, his athleticism was useful on the pitch.”
“Mount was great in the first half and set the tone for the game. It was good to see Lingard enjoying football again. There was a lot of good stuff.”
