To steal victory from Portugal, Serbia scored a dramatic last-minute winner and qualified for the 2022 World Cup beating a side from the FIFA top 30 world rankings for the first time since 2013. In front of a home crowd, Portugal took the lead in just 2 minutes of the football match as Bernardo Silva dispossessed Nemanja Gudelj on the edge of his own box, with the ball eventually dropping to Renato Sanches to open the score.
As the first half went on Serbia grew into the game and went close to restoring the parity within 10 minutes as Dusan Vlahovic rattled the frame of the goal. Shortly after the half-hour mark, the visitors did find an equalizer as Dusan Tadic’s shot was spilled by Rui Patricio and ended up in the back of his net.
After the break, Fernando Santos had plenty to ponder, and his side could’ve been behind after Vlahović found the target, but the Fiorentina striker was offside. For the second half, the ‘Eagles’ introduced Aleksandar Mitrovic, knowing nothing but a win would secure qualification. However, this opened up spaces on the counter and the hosts exploited this, with Sanches squandering a huge chance to restore the lead.
Serbia’s best chance for victory came through the Fulham forward as he met a cross from the left, but his glancing header went wide. However, the Serbians continued to press for a winner and found the breakthrough in the 90tth minute to stun all of Lisbon, as Mitrovic this time made no mistake sending a powerful header, past helpless Patricio.
To qualify for the World Cup in Qatar Portugal will now have to go through the play-offs – all the hosts needed was a draw to go through, but their first loss of the qualifying campaign cost them too much.
