Romelu Lukaku sets new Europa League record

Romelu Lukaku set a new record in the competition as Inter took on Bayer Leverkusen on Monday for a ninth consecutive Europa League match (via Metro).

Romelu Lukaku became the first player to score in nine consecutive matches in the Europa League with his strike against Bayer Leverkusen.

Inter forward Lukaku put Antonio Conte’s side 2-0 up 21 minutes, in the quarter-final clash in Germany, squeezing a low finish in after holding off Edmond Tapsoba before Kai Havertz pulled one back to Leverkusen.

Lukaku matched a long-time Alan Shearer record last week with a strike against Getafe, and became the first player to score in either the UEFA Cup or the Europa League in nine straight matches.

Previously, in the 2014-15 competition with Everton, Belgium international had played scoring in matches against Dynamo Kyiv, Young Boys, and Wolfsburg.

Lukaku looked ready to have a chance to add to his tally, shortly after Havertz’s goal, when Daley Sinkgraven was penalized for handball, but the spot-kick was reversed after the referee reviewed with VAR.

Ex-Manchester United striker Lukaku scored 23 league goals for Inter during his maiden season in Serie A as they finished second behind Juventus.
