Republic of Ireland held a goalless draw with Portugal

Portugal visited the Republic of Ireland for the first time since 2005 but was only able to settle on a draw with Stephen Kenny’s team. Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo held to set up Serbia decider in Group A.

Leaving Sunday’s football match against Serbia as the decider for the top spot in World Cup qualification Group A, the Republic of Ireland held Portugal to a goalless draw. In five games across all competitions, Fernando Santos’ side had scored 16 goals, but they could only generate two efforts on goal in a dismal outing in Dublin.

Cristiano Ronaldo came the closest to breaking the deadlock in Thursday’s match, but even the all-time best scorer in men’s international football was unable to do it. Portugal, who had Pepe sent off late in the game for two bookable offences, and Serbia are both on 17 points with one game left, with the latter travelling to Lisbon for a winner-takes-all decider.

Portugal was unable to produce an away goal against the Republic of Ireland, but they did return to the top of Group A, one goal ahead of Serbia. They will now compete on Tuesday night to see who will qualify for Qatar automatically. Check out football highlights of the Republic of Ireland draw with Portugal in World Cup Qualifying game.
