According to the latest reports, Barcelona are still not willing to keep Philippe Coutinho in their books despite starting the 2019-20 season well with Bayern Munich, who signed him on a loan deal last August.
Coutinho arrived at Barcelona from Premier League giants Liverpool in January 2018 with a lot of promise, for a reported transfer fee of €145million. He was tipped to easily fill the void left by Neymar Jr.’s departure to Ligue 1 champions PSG in the previous transfer window, but contrary to all expectations, he failed to make an impression at the Camp Nou.
Between January 2018 and August 2019, he played a total of 76 matches for the Blaugrana, but could record only 21 goals and 11 assists. Although he lifted two consecutive La Liga titles with the club, his contributions did not amount to much and following a disastrous showing in the Champions League semi-final defeat against his former club Liverpool, he was shown the exit door by Barcelona’s management, albeit on a temporary basis.
At Bayern Munich, his form did not improve much but still he showed signs of progress, with nine goals and eight assists from 32 appearances until the rest of the season got suspended due to Coronavirus. And now, the absence of competitive football seems to have declined his value even further, according to a report in Goal.
The English news agency claims that the Spanish champions remain keen on a summer sale to finance a move for Neymar, who they are keen to bring back from PSG. Another player on Barcelona’s wish list is Inter Milan’s Lautaro Martinez, who is expected to cost at least another 100million.
In a recent interview, Quique Setien, the manager of the Catalan outfit had claimed that Coutinho will be a part of his plans for the next season. He even called the playmaker “a great player.” However, according to Goal, Setien’s remarks will have no bearing with the management’s stance on the 27-year-old, as they have already decided they will place him on the transfer list at the end of the ongoing season.
Apparently, Manchester United and Chelsea are linked to the Brazilian, but it remains to be seen whether either of these clubs will make a formal approach for him.
