Referee Björn Kuipers announced retirement

The Dutch referee Bjorn Kuipers has announced his retirement on August 7th. The match between Ajax and PSV will be his last game. He has refereed two Europa League finals (2013 and 2018) and the 2014 Champions League final between Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid.

“It’s been nice. They sometimes say you should stop at your peak. And in that regard, there is no better moment than this one” – said Kuipers, journalist Chris Williams reports.

The Dutchman’s career started in 2002. Since then the referee has also served the 2014 and 2018 World Cups and 3 consecutive European championships in 2012, 2016, and 2020.

Kuipers was the first Dutchman to referee a Euros final and has been given the honour of officiating the biggest international game of the year. The Euro 2020 final between Italy and England was supervised by Kuipers. Italy won the European tournament on 3-2 penalties against Gareth Southgate’s team.

Björn Kuipers, 48, took this big decision during his vacation, after landing at Amsterdam airport.  However, it is noted that he is still in doubt about continuing following Euro 2020 match. As reported by KNVB he said, “After the Euro final I got a lot of positive reactions and appreciation from all over the world. Moreover, I am still fit and have a lot of fun. I realized I’ve been everywhere and experienced everything. I will not get more beautiful. There’s no better moment to stop”

The 48-year-old Netherlands international is known as the world’s richest referee. According to reports, Björn’s reported worth is £11.5 million in 2016. The veteran match official co-founded supermarket chain, Jumbo Kuipers, in his home country after earning a business administration degree from the Radboud University in Nijmegen.
