RB Leipzig defeated Werder Bremen, reached German Cup final

RB Leipzig made it to the final of the German Cup after beating Werder Bremen 2–1 in extra time on Friday. Leipzig has the distinction of reaching the final of the German Cup for the second time with the help of a last-time goal by Emil Forsberg. RB Leipzig narrowly defeated Werder Bremen to advance to the DFB Cup final.

Leipzig shot out of the blocks in search of a second DFB Cup final debut, taking only four minutes to push Werder goalkeeper Jiri Pavlenka into action. Angelino’s outside-foot cross found Alexander Sorloth, whose header appeared bound for the back of the net before Pavlenka interfered low to his right.

On the stroke of halftime, the hosts believed they had a penalty, only for the referee to reverse his own decision after consulting the pitch-side monitors, and the two teams went into the break goalless.

After the break, Leipzig’s waves of attack were met with tenacious Werder resistance, and if it wasn’t the Bremen defence, it was the woodwork, with Willi Orban and Christopher Nkunku denied by the crossbar and post, respectively.

Both teams could not score goals in the stipulated 90 minutes, the game was pushed to an added time of 30 minutes. At the start of extra time, Leipzig started to build up the pressure. The first goal of the match was scored for Leipzig by Hwang Hee-Chan in the 93rd minute. After this, Leonardo Bittencourt equaled Bremen, scoring in the 106th minute, but by scoring in the 121st minute, Emil confirmed his team’s victory.

Who will face Leipzig in the final will be decided on Saturday when Borussia Dortmund will face Second Division Club Holstein Kiel.
