Spanish football club Real Madrid will have to play in the Champions League second-leg semi-final against Chelsea on Thursday without their star central defender Raphael Varane. The club has confirmed that Varane is injured.
According to the club, the French player has picked up an injury to the right abductor muscle. The injury was sustained during the La Liga match on Saturday. In addition to the Champions League match, Varane will also stay away from the major La Liga matches next weekend due to this injury. These matches are to be held with Sevilla, Granada, and Bilbao.
A statement released on Real’s official website reads: “After the tests carried out today on our player Raphael Varane by the Real Madrid Medical Services, he was diagnosed with an injury to the right abductor muscles.”
However, for the Champions League match Real could replace Varane with captain Sergio Ramos, who returned to training at the end of last week. The 35-year-old defender was absent since playing for Spain in March end.
Zinedine Zidane side will also be without Dani Carvajal and Federico Valverde for the most important semi-finals against the London club. Last week during the first leg, Carvajal sustained a hamstring injury and the right-back is expected to miss the rest of the season. Valverde has been diagnosed with coronavirus and has not appeared since the 0-0 draw at Liverpool on April 14.
If this team of Madrid has to go to the finals, then they will have to score in the match in London. Captain Sergio Ramos will return in this match. Ramos, however, will have to enter the field without delay and he will have a major challenge to stop Chelsea’s forward line with the best attack line in Europe. Real Madrid visits Stamford Bridge to face Chelsea for the return leg of the Champions League semi-finals.
