Rafa Marquez started his coaching career with Spain’s fourth division

Mexico legend Rafa Marquez enters into coaching as he has started his youth coaching career training at Spain’s fourth division side Real Sociedad Deportiva Alcala.

The 41-year-old had a nine-month stint as the sporting president of Atlas after he retired in July 2018 after playing in his fifth World Cup, but now he has moved into the coaching world.

“It is a nice opportunity for which I am very grateful,” Marquez said in quotes carried by the website of the club. “I had a very warm welcome at the project, to which I feel very committed and to which I come in good spirits to assist and offer my entire experience as a player and now as a coach.”

After his time with Barcelona, Marquez holds a Spanish passport.

Marquez is currently studying with the Spanish Football Federation for his UEFA Pro license as he becomes a head coach.

“The young players at Alcala will have the fortune to learn from a player who left Atlas for European Football after shining for his national team at the Copa America in Paraguay in 1999, where he practically performed all of his successful sporting careers,” read the club statement.

After Grupo Orlegi bought out the club and became a fierce critic of how the Mexican game is running, Marquez left Atlas last May slamming the promotion and relegation suspension: between the top two divisions.

“Instead of moving forward every day with these decisions, we ‘re going backward and when it’s run like this, with the interests of team owners [take priority], we ‘re not going to achieve anything on the sports side,” he told ESPN in April.
