Premier League can sign short-term contract extensions

Premier League teams will be given a green light to sign short-term contract extensions with players whose existing contracts expire on 30 June.

Owing to the coronavirus pandemic many football leagues across the globe have been on a standstill since March.

After the UK Government declared its readiness for the professional sport to return from 1 June, with the Premier League pursuing a proposal to revive the current 2019-20 campaign and continue behind closed doors, players from all 20 clubs are now free to sign short-term deals before the end of the season, if necessary.

Premier League chief executive Richard Masters revealed in a statement, “What we decided is to ensure, as far as possible, that clubs complete the season with the same squad they had available, prior to the suspension of the campaign.”

“Players can extend their contracts beyond June 30 until the end of the season, but it must be agreed by both parties.”

Every Premier League club will now have until June 23 to agree on these extensions with their players.
